What a day! Everyone keeps telling me that one day I will look back on this day and laugh, and I know that's true, because most of my life consists of hilarious memories of some crazy thing or another. Like the time I was escorted to the gas station to put air in my tire, at 2am after walking my shift in the "Race For The Cure", because the cop thought I was inebriated and trying to hide it by driving too slowly. Or the time, very early in our marriage, that my husband was really grumpy on the way to Church because the city sewer had backed up into our basement early that morning, and so I imitated him using my best Charlie Brown Teacher voice, and it was such a good impression of him that we laughed all the way. Or the time... but I digress... The are enough stories for a book!
So my day actually started last night, after we got home, we got easy for bed, talked to Grandmama, and read stories for, like, a long time.... At least 10 books! Then we tried to call daddy, because he is out of town, and say goodnight. Unfortunately, daddy's phone was not on and we couldn't get whole of him, which made bedtime worse, and longer! Thanks daddy for being such a good bedtime helper that I just can't do it without you!
This morning I got the kiddos out of bed and put their clothes and socks on and asked them to put on their shoes, just like we do every morning. Then I grab all of the things that are sitting by the door, ready to go out in the car, and this morning added all of the coats as well... Because you never know what the weather is going to do in KS. The kiddos followed me out to the car with their blankets, as usual, and buckled their carseats, waiting patiently for me to come around an make sure the straps were pulled tight. We had bananas and string cheese on the way to school, and I even remembered to bring the popcorn popper and popcorn, etc., for the Dr. Seuss birthday party! Imagine my surprise when we get all the way downtown,25 miles from home, and realize that neither child has on shoes. I had to carry the children in, one at a time, and then go back for all of the stuff that a little person in pre-school requires.
At this point, I am starving, wishing for a Starbucks, and realize that no matter what I do, I am going to be late for my test. So, I do what any other self respecting mom does. I got out the GPS and asked it to take me to the nearest Walmart, which is the closest retail store to downtown that is open at 8am. I was tootling along, listening to the un-soothing voice on the GPS & KLOVE, when I realize that I was completely out of gas. No, not "the light just same on and I know I have about 20 more miles left one this tank", it was the " I just drove my last 30 miles on this tank and the indicator is so far below the line at I am afraid it is just going to point straight down" desperate kind of out of gas. Of top of that, our summer in March turned into the ides of winter when it started snowing on my way to take my test! And I didn't bring a coat, because I don't wear one, and because it was 60 degrees when I left the house. Ay, yai, yai.
At this point I was ready to pull into the nearest McDonald's and get a large diet Dr. Pepper, which is what I gave up for Lent and I crave all of the time!
Well, needless to say, I got to the gas station one fumes and prayers, and I got new tennis shoes for the kids, because they are going to need the next size up at some point anyway... Hey it's Dr. Seuss day... Who's going to notice. And I took my test, which took me the entire 5 hours, and now I am wiped out. It's good to know that He is watching out for my family, because I am obviously way too scatterbrained to keep up with everything right now!
I know that I am not supermom, nor do I want to be. His Grace is sufficient and I have almost made it through another day. The house is a disaster, and we are eating off of paper plates, which I hate to do, but we are making it with Joy! I am going to take a nap before I go pick up the kids, because I have one more bedtime before daddy gets home. And we are going to make the most of it!
